Of Batman & his charming princess.
An engagement portraiture session with Jared & Adele, great mates of mine from One Mustard Seed. (Just in case you don’t know them, One Mustard Seed is a team of amazing film-makers & photographers; these two are the engine runners a.k.a. the *Taukeh. When two super creative individuals becoming one, what do call them then – One Unbeatable Seed?

I remembered how excited I was when asked to do their engagement portraiture session; to be asked by great photographers themselves to capture their story. Privileged for sure!!
Two things I anticipated most before the shoot was – to hear their love story & the creative planning for the shoot! Jared is originally from Malaysia & Adele from Singapore; met in Brisbane. Getting amongst their creativity was as if stepping into their virtual space of wonderland – where legos, superheroes, handcrafted vintage goodies, things of the Peranakan culture (Adele’s background), vintage & non vintage great DSLR cameras rule kingdoms & nations. Fun times! (Random side note : I visited their actual engine room for pre-shoot meeting & they served iced lemon tea – my brain beverage).
The Shoot
It was casual, we had breakfast at Plenty, Westend; lovely food & interior. Strolling around Westend (the hipsterish urban suburb) of Brisbane, we found a bike shop – The Bicycle Revolution Co-op, just across the street from Plenty. Jared mentioned that he grew up mucking around in his grandpa’s bike shop in Taiping, Malaysia. This place does bring memories to life for him of his childhood days arranging bike spokes in grandpa’s bike shop. The junk yard of Bicycle Revolution was total divine to me, thanks to the kind owner who allowed us to get in there & appreciate the beauty of it. (Absolute hidden gem, considering how humble the shop front looks like).
We decided to head over to South Bank after, I was hoping to capture tinge of the Brisbane city view in the background of my shots. Thoughts in my story-telling head were –
1. This is the city where Jared & Adele’s story began, I wanted them to have this magnificent frame of them+Brisbane, just in case this pair of adventurers ever move to other cities in the near future.
2. An extraordinary frame need to be birthed – I felt I was in that crazily creative zone that moment where something magical has to happen (don’t know why? feelings are hard to explain – perhaps I was within the creative aura of these two superb creative folks).
It was nonetheless a fun session with these two because we share so many common childhood & cultural background, and of course our passion in photography. Capturing the sweet love of these creative beings was so enjoyable.
